Common Causes of Hip Pain

There are many different reasons as to why a person's hip may cause them pain or discomfort, including:

  • Arthritis
  • Trochanteric Bursitis
  • Tendonitis
  • Osteonecrosis
  • Stress Fracture
  • Hip Fracture

Arthritis is one of the most common types of issues that cause hip pain, but there are treatments available that can be utilized to lessen or eliminate a person's hip pain. If medication is unsuccessful in lessening a person's pain, they may need hip replacement surgery. Trochanteric bursitis is when the bursa over the outside of the hip joint becomes inflamed, which can cause a lot of pain and discomfort. When an individual's tendons in the hip area become inflamed, they may be suffering from tendonitis. The most common type of tendonitis in the hip area is called iliotibial band tendonitis. Osteonecrosis occurs when blood flow to a person's hip becomes restricted. When an inadequate amount of blood reaches the hip area, the cells can die and the bone may collapse. Osteonecrosis frequently occurs in the hip region. Elderly people who suffer from osteoporosis may suffer from a hip fracture. Fractured hips must be treated by surgery that will either involve replacing or repairing the broken portion of an individual's hip. A stress fracture is common among athletes who are involved in high-impact sports, such as running.

Hip Injuries

Although people of all ages are susceptible to hip injuries, children, teens, and young adults who are athletes have a greater risk of suffering from a hip injury. Elderly people are also candidates for hip injuries because they have less bone density and joint elasticity than younger individuals. People who are overweight may also suffer from hip injuries due to excessive pressure on their hips. If a patient requires surgery for their hip injury, Dr. Hartman can perform arthroscopic surgery, which is a minimally invasive procedure. Please call Dr. Hartman's office at 504-412-1700 to schedule an appointment or to learn more about his sports medicine and orthopaedic services.
